Overview

The group at ILRI (International Livestock Research Institute) have worked with the world bank to produce a decent GIS system describing East Africa (being used at the moment for targeting aid) - http://www.worldbank.org/research/povertymaps/kenya/. The group at ILRI also have extensive skills regarding cattle genotyping and contacting cattle farmers across Kenya At discussion in Nairobi what people wanted to do was to integrate the GIS system, with cow meta data (captured in an XML repository), and SNP data.

Overall Goals

Three layer data capture problem:

* Capturing information on geographical location – GIS skills This data can change over time – new requests for calculations of distance from (e.g. a metal road) can be incorporated. Users need to know an up-to-date list of things they can search over, so the interface needs to notice or notify the user of changes.

* Capturing Cattle meta-data A detailed questionnaire filled in by farmers – what breeds of cattle, how big is the farm etc. This can be captured in an xml or rdf repository? Which is better? If rdf, perhaps GIS data can also be described this way enabling 1 set of queries?

* Capturing SNP data Can already plan workflows that capture this data – tell me all you know about this snp. There is an overlap here with the qtl analysis workflows

Workflow outline

This scenario involves workflows and OGSA-DAI queries, so it is potentially a good use case for myGrid / OGSA-DAI integration
