A Demo Scenario

(original posted by Robert Stevens to myGrid mailing lists on 15 April 2003)

  1. "I have a project to look at SNPs and Grave's Disease." I start by making a review of my group's Grave's disease project's experiments (provenance query for personalisation). Now I know the state of play with my project.
  2. I'm notified that one of my team has uploaded a new set of results from a micro-array experiment. "In one experiment I have a micro array chip to analyse; to start with, I look at the chip's provenance to see how it was normalised. then I simply want to find out about each of the up regulated genes (one experiment); Depending on the results, I may wish to perform some primer design (second experiment)."
  3. Who else has performed the two parts of experiment one before? I need to analyse my chip for genes with a change in regulation. For those genes with a change in transcription level, I want to find out all I can about those genes." (Semantic discovery). I build a two based descriptions: first, including an input of Affy chip; task of analysing chip for regulation change; output of a set of ids; and Second a workflow that tells me all I want to know about a gene. (use semantic describer).
  4. I'm shown a collection of workflows that match the descriptions (workflow visualiser) I pick the ones I want to use. I then use my editor to join them together (workflow editor).
  5. run workflow, placing my data as input. (workflow enactment). I want to intervene before any upregulated genes go on to be characterised (interaction with workflow). I expect my provenance record to indicate what I have done and which data elements go on to be analysed).
  6. view results when notified of completion. (notification) & visualisation.
  7. Place record of experiment run in my lab book and have it signed by manager. (provenance).
  8. Look at my results (visualisation) and pick some genes for which I wish to design some primers.
  9. Search for experiment to perform primer design. (semantic search).
  10. run workflow with my collection of genes. this may involve me in interacting with the user interface of third party applications. (enactment)
  11. View results when experiment complete. (notification & visualisation).
  12. Place record in my lab book and have it signed. (provenance).
  13. review my project's experiments (provenance query for personalisation). These could be organised by person, experiment and time.
